Some activities in health care innovation courses ask you to create and upload images or slide presentations. Though these may seem daunting, they do not need to be complicated. The goal of using images or slides is to convey your ideas clearly and persuasively. And in most cases, a layout that is simple and uncluttered works best.
To create individual images, you may:
- Use any imaging application on your computer or in the cloud. These include:
- Microsoft PowerPoint or Visio
- LibreOffice Impress or Draw
- Google Slides or Drawings
- Create a visual by hand, and then either take a photo or scan the page (see how to transfer images from an Android smartphone or an iPhone to your computer).
- Create charts with Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets, and then export them as images.
Images should be neat, cropped, and readable, but they can also be simple.
To create presentations, we recommend:
- Using Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides, and then embedding your presentation in the assignment.
- Using Microsoft Sway, which allows you to build presentations and stories specifically for the Web.
All images used for class should be your own property or available for public use under an open license. Please consult the library's guide to finding and using open access images.

Uploading and Embedding Images in a Canvas Discussion
Canvas allows you to upload and embed images directly into a discussion post. To do this:
- From the discussion editor, click the Embed Image toolbar icon.
- The Upload Image dialog box will pop up, and your image will automatically upload when you drag it from your computer onto the rocket ship graphic.
- Once the image is uploaded, set its alt text and tick the embed image.
- Click the submit button to embed the file.
Once you have embedded the file, you can resize the image by selecting it in the rich content editor, and dragging it to your desired dimensions from any of the corners. You can also center, left, or right justify the image.
For more information about uploading and embedding images in a discussion, see the Canvas help page on embedding images from the rich content editor as a student.
